Description

BOY AND GIRL detail

BOY AND GIRL. In 1996 a giant cedar tree was threatening to fall on a part of Cosgrove Hall just outside Milton Keynes and was cut down for safety reasons. To prevent the tree being cut up and burnt Robert Koenig hired a crane and took the main trunk to his studio in Milton Keynes Village. The trunk was 2m in diameter and 7m long. He stood the trunk on its end and surrounded it with scaffolding. He spent 8 months carving this monolith. A local woman, dressed in clothing fashionable at the time, acted as the model for the female figure in the sculpture. The final carving was 2m in diameter and 5m tall. It was acquired by the New Towns Commission and sited on a purpose made earth mound on a roundaout outside the De Montfort University building in Milton Keynes.
