James Whale, (born July 22, 1889, Dudley, Worcestershire, England—died May 29, 1957, Los Angeles, California, U.S.), British-born American filmmaker whose stylish horror films marked him as one of the most distinctive filmmakers of the early 1930s. Born into a poor family in an English coal-mining town, Whale was eager to join the army when World War I broke out.
